WHAT OCCURED?

When his team faces Iceland in Euro 2024 qualification, the 38-year-old forward, who is now playing club football in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, will become the first man to reach a century of appearances for his country. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has accomplished nearly everything at the greatest level, with the record books constantly being rewritten, yet he remains totally devoted to the Portuguese cause and vows he will never withdraw from consideration for selection by his nation.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Ronaldo stated, "I'll stay here until I, the president of the [football federation], and the coach believe I can." I'll never stop returning here since it's always a dream for me. Representing the national squad is the pinnacle of achievement.

“Do I hope to do more? Obviously, that's why I'm here. That's why I keep on walking. Living the moment, day by day, seeing my form. I think I'm still doing well, helping, scoring goals and giving good performances. As long as I'm motivated and those around me like my presence and leadership, I will not give up the national team in any way. As [former Portuguese defender] Bruno Alves said, 'I will not give away my place for free.' It's been a long journey, but it won't end soon, I hope.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE:

Ronaldo has become accustomed to making history during his incredible career, but there are still goals for him to pursue, and he is understandably thrilled to have reached another significant milestone with Portugal. "It is an extremely important milestone for me," he continued. It means a lot to me. As the 200th game, I will be the first in history to accomplish so. I'm quite proud of myself since this is something I never imagined I'd be able to achieve, but I have to keep going. I have a lot more work to do. It's a lovely round number that no one else possesses. I mean it when I say that I don't follow the records; they follow me. I'm pleased, and it serves as incentive for me to continue playing at the greatest level for the national team. It was something I never believed I'd be able to do. And I'm still breaking records.

"What's left to beat?" I'm not sure. I'm aware that I have some records. What I most desire is to win and advance to the European Championship."

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Ronaldo helped Portugal win the European Championship in 2016 and will be looking to play a key role in another continental triumph when the event returns to Germany in the summer of 2024.
