action kicks off with a captivating start as the spotlight shifts from Harare to Bulawayo. The Queens Sports Club sets the stage for an enthralling encounter between Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates, marking the beginning of their campaign. Simultaneously, at the Bulawayo Athletic Club, Oman and Ireland engage in a thrilling clash, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

In the highly anticipated Match 3 at the Queens Sports Club, Sri Lanka faces off against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Adding to the excitement, UAE has won the toss and decided to bowl first. This match holds particular significance as it marks the first men's One Day International (ODI) encounter between these two teams in nearly 15 years. Expectations are running high as both teams gear up to showcase their skills and compete fiercely for victory.

The Emirati team management made some interesting choices for their playing XI, leaving out Junaid Siddique and opting instead for Zahoor Khan, Muhammad Jawadullah, and the promising fast bowler Ali Nasser. On the Sri Lankan side, there were no surprises in their lineup, although they were missing the services of Dushmantha Chameera due to a pectoral issue. However, they welcomed back Dimuth Karunaratne, who made a comeback to the ODI batting lineup after a two-year hiatus.

Having been put in to bat first, the decision to include Karunaratne proved fruitful for Sri Lanka. His return showcased exactly why the team management decided to bring him back ahead of the Qualifier, as he displayed a solid technique and capitalized on the slight movement in the conditions. Karunaratne effortlessly accumulated six boundaries in the Powerplay, exhibiting his ability to find the gaps and score runs comfortably.

Meanwhile, Pathum Nissanka initially struggled to find his rhythm at the crease. However, his perseverance paid off as he struck back-to-back boundaries off Muhammad Jawadullah in the fifth over, finally getting his innings underway and gaining some momentum.

The openers kept the scoreboard ticking and in the process, Karunaratne brought up his third consecutive fifty but fell in the very next over. The opening pair added 95 runs for the first wicket.

Joining hands with Kusal Mendis to build on the foundation, Nissanka too reached the 50-run landmark as Sri Lanka were coasting at 133/1 at the halfway stage of their innings.

Despite being considered strong contenders, Sri Lanka enters the match as hot favorites, aiming to maintain their reputation in the tournament. However, this particular tournament presents a unique challenge for the Sri Lankan team. Unlike previous editions where they secured automatic qualification for the Men's ICC Cricket World Cup since 1983, this time they find themselves in uncharted territory, having to participate in a qualifying tournament.

The last time Sri Lanka had to go through a qualifying tournament to reach the World Cup was during the 1979 ICC Trophy. Since then, they have consistently qualified directly for the main event. This shift in their journey adds an element of novelty and uncertainty to their campaign, as they strive to secure their spot in the upcoming World Cup.

On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established themselves as familiar participants in the qualifying tournaments. They have been a part of every qualifying event since 1994, including the ICC Trophy that preceded the current format. The UAE team has their sights set on progressing to the main field in 2023, similar to their achievement in the 2015 tournament held in Australia.

With their experience and history in the qualifying rounds, UAE aims to utilize their familiarity with the process to their advantage. They have shown their ability to navigate these tournaments successfully in the past, and now they strive to repeat their feat and secure a spot in the prestigious ICC Cricket World Cup.

Moving to the thrilling Match 4 

held at the Bulawayo Athletic Club, Oman won the toss and elected to bowl. Prior to the match, Ireland's captain Andrew Balbirnie confirmed an interesting change in their batting lineup. Andy McBrine would open the innings alongside Paul Stirling, a strategic decision that had been tested during the warm-up matches. Additionally, the team introduced Ben White as an extra spinner, and they welcomed back Josh Little, who had sat out their previous Test match against England. 

Opting to bat first, Andy McBrine and Paul Stirling wasted no time in launching an aggressive assault on the Oman bowlers, setting a brisk tempo right from the start. The openers confidently struck a boundary each in the second over, laying a solid foundation for Ireland's innings. Throughout the Powerplay, they continued to find the boundaries with relative ease, establishing a dominant position for their team.

However, just as the partnership was gaining momentum and had surpassed the 50-run mark, the Omani bowlers employed a short-ball strategy that proved successful. In consecutive deliveries, Stirling fell victim to a mistimed pull shot, finding a fielder in the deep, while McBrine mistimed his shot and was caught at mid-off, failing to clear the ring. This sudden turn of events brought an end to their promising opening partnership.
