An airport worker in the United States died after being 'ingested' by a jet engine.
A Delta Airlines flight.

On Friday night, a Delta flight from Los Angeles arrived in San Antonio, Texas, and was taxiing to the gate with one engine on "when a worker was ingested into that engine," the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in a statement to AFP.

"The NTSB is continuing to gather information about the event," the agency stated.

According to local media, the worker was employed by Unifi Aviation, a business with whom the airline major contracts for ground crew operations.

Delta informed KENS 5 in San Antonio that it was "deeply saddened" by the events of Friday night and that it is "cooperating with authorities as they begin their investigation."

The incident was described as "a tragic accident" by Unifi Aviation.

"Based on our preliminary investigation," the business stated, "this incident was unrelated to Unifi's operational processes, safety procedures, or policies."

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), another regulatory authority, fined Piedmont Airlines $15,625 on Wednesday for the death of a ground crew member in a similar event last year.

"Proper training and enforcement of safety procedures could have prevented this tragedy," according to an OSHA official.

Piedmont is a subsidiary of carrier American Airlines.
